How the Syndicate Works

Understanding Cask Ownership

Before anything else, it is important to understand what you are actually buying, what happens to it and how you eventually sell it.

What is a cask?

A cask is a physical barrel of Scotch whisky stored and matured in Scotland. Rather than buying bottles, a member owns the whisky while it is still ageing in the cask. Barrel & Bond sources casks through its network of distilleries, brokers and independent sellers, with each acquisition reviewed before it is offered to a member.

What do I actually own?

You own a physical cask, not a share in a fund or a subscription. The cask remains in an HMRC bonded warehouse and ownership is held under a delivery order in your name. In simple terms, there is a documented record that the cask belongs to you.

What happens while I own it?

The whisky stays in its cask and continues to mature. Cask ownership is designed to be long-term, with Barrel & Bond typically working around holding periods of 5–15 years. During that time, members can also be involved in the whisky itself through visits, tastings and the wider syndicate experience.

How do I get my money out?

Every cask Barrel & Bond acquires has two potential exit routes considered before it is purchased. When the time comes, you can either sell the whole cask back into the whisky trade, or bottle the whisky and sell it through an independent bottling route. The whole-cask route is typically quicker, while bottling can offer a higher gross realisation but takes longer and carries additional costs.

There is no guaranteed sale price. The amount ultimately realised depends on the cask, its performance, market demand and conditions at the time you choose to exit.

WHY BARREL & BOND

What separates us from the rest of the market

01

CREDENTIALED BOARD

A board with direct
experience across the
Scotch trade, cask
brokerage, independent
bottling and private client investment. Every
acquisition is signed off atboard level before a
member ever sees it.

02

ROBUST EXIT STRATEGY

Every cask entering the
syndicate is acquired with two viable exit routes already mapped:
independent bottling and whole cask trade resale. We do not buy casks we cannot exit.

03

CLIENT MATCHING MATRIX

We match casks to
individual member
objectives, capital
preservation, income
horizon, collector interest or legacy, via an internal matrix rather than pushing a single product to the whole book.

04

SOURCING & PRICING EDGE

Direct relationships with
distilleries, brokers and
independent bottlers. Every entry price is stress tested against auction, retail and
independent bottler
benchmarks before a cask is booked.

05

GENUINE EXCLUSIVITY

A small, invitation only
syndicate, not a fund, not a subscription. Membership is capped, opportunities are allocated, and the
community around the
casks is deliberately kept small.

THE CLIENT MATCHING MATRIX

How we match opportunities to member objectives

No two members join Barrel & Bond for the same reason. Some are building capital, some are collecting, some are planning a legacy. Rather than
push a single product across the book, we match each opportunity against a member's stated objectives before we make an introduction.

CAPITAL PRESERVATION

Steady, lower risk, longer hold.

PRESERVATION FIT
Older cask, held to beat inflation, whole
cask exit

Capital growth

GROWTH FIT

COLLECTOR FIT
Passion for whisky, access to casks no
one else can source

Legacy and gifting

Held for family, transferable, private label.

LEGACY FIT
Tax led structure, long hold, family
transfer

Exit Strategy

TWO ROUTES TO EXIT

Every cask is sourced with two viable exits already mapped

ROUTE 1 · BOTTLE & SELL

Independent bottling

The cask is bottled through an independent bottler and sold at retail. Higher
gross realisation, but realisation is slower, bottling, labelling, duty and retail sell
through typically add six to twelve months after the maturation window. Best
suited to members with a longer patience horizon.

ROUTE 2 · WHOLE CASK RESALE

Trade resale, in bond

Whole barrel resold through the trade in bond, typically at broker prices
around 40% below retail. Lower gross realisation, but the exit is fast and clean,
a single in bond transaction settles within four to twelve weeks with no
bottling, no duty and no VAT for the member.

PRIVATE ACCESS STARTS WITH TRUST

If you've been introduced to Barrel & Bond, it's for a reason.

Access isn't open to the public. It's built on direct relationships, and on the people already inside the network choosing to bring others in.
